Speaking of Maggie Smith, see if you can get A Private Function. I own it on DVD. I had to get a UK release because it just isn't available here. It's an absolutely fantastic film! (I wrote that after reading only the first paragraph.)

Another D+?! You aren't watching too many films, are you?

Personally, women who wear glasses and are both homely nerds *and* evil schemers are totally my type!

I haven't seen this film. But I find it interesting because in high school, there was this English teacher. She taught all the high-level courses, so I never had her. She tormented all the smart freshmen. But then, she pandered to them as juniors and seniors. And they all graduated loving her. I had some interactions with her because I was president of the speech club. I found her a horrible human being. She seemed like an insecure student who really wanted to be liked by the cool kids. And looking back, I think the whole "mean to freshmen" and "nice to juniors" was classic psychological manipulation. But I still know people from high school who love her and will not listen to a single bad thing about her. And since that is all I have to say, we don't talk about her. But I see her as sad rather than evil.

It's inevitable that you'll watch too many if you're reviewing one a day. I'm not gonna bother with failed little films I saw but nobody's heard of. Smith won an Oscar for this, so people might be curious about it. She's alright in it; the movie is nasty.

A Private Function is available from interlibrary loan! No idea how old the copy/transfer is.

That’s odd about your old teacher. There’s ones I still love, but they were ones who showed real kindness to the kids in pain. Maybe your friends credit that teacher with starting their fabulous careers? I dunno.

I have little doubt of that! She has a lot of fans. Kids are stupid -- easily fooled. It is certainly true that my Spanish teacher is the one I credit for my love of English. But she was just a flat-out great teacher. No mind games. And I was a constant disappointment to her because I was a terrible Spanish student. But still...

I hope you enjoy A Private Function! It is good for multiple viewings! I'm going to the library right now to pick up Calvary (2014). I love that film. I never stop being amazed that American Christians love films like The Passion of the Christ (2004) and God's Not Dead (2014) but have no interest in thoughtful films about religion. But it does go along with their primitive theologies!

A great teacher is a great teacher if we're good at it or not.

I had a high school drama teacher like that, and my acting skills are lousy! A college teacher of US Naval History, and I couldn’t give a shit about US Naval History! But, you know what -- I remember their names to this day. They were into the subject and shared their love about the material.

And the one in junior high who stood up for the picked-on shy misfits? I don’t just remember his name, I can point out the EXACT SHOT he's in as an extra in "Point Break." (The Keanu/Swayze surfing movie, which is awful, but had a scene set in Australia that's actually filmed in Oregon. Because the Australian coast has Oregon pine trees all over it and looks misty all the time. Riiiiight.)

Ha! Andrea and I watched Hot Fuzz tonight and we were talking about what a horrible film Point Break is! (I watched it quite recently.) But that is just too cool. Please: request the film from the library; play it on your computer; take a screenshot; and send it to me!

I feel bad that I was never able to tell that teacher what she meant to me. It may have seemed like I wasn't paying attention but she was lighting up all my computer lights in a way no other teacher did

I will try! You're asking me to learn several computer skills I don't know. But I'll give it a go.

What a great teacher you had. And, from the teachers I know, that's the point. To be nice, and hope you help a little bit in some young person's life. Not to be a leader they idolize forever!

I also think the teachers know. For all that is bad about being a teachers, the best ones must get a lot of fulfillment knowing they changing lives.
