The Naked Prey is an amazing film! I own it and have seen it multiple times. What I love about it is that it manages not to be racist. But maybe it is just that I love seeing rich a-holes get what they deserve.
Of course, the best version is Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity because it's the only one with Brinke Stevens!
I can't believe I haven't seen this film! Andrea and I went through a phase where we were watching silent features. I know this is a sound film but it is great to go back and watch these old films. For one thing, it shows that things haven't changed that much. In fact, I find older films have more intention. One of my biggest complaints about modern films is the way that special effects allow filmmakers to extend films to ridiculous lengths in ways that only diminish the narrative.
Another fun film from this period is Gunga Din (1939). You will, however, have to look past the racism. Sam Jaffe plays the title role. The bad guy is Abner Biberman, who was a wonderful actor (Check out His Girl Friday!) but mostly gave it up in his 40s to become a very successful film and (later) TV director.
I think you’d enjoy it. Those dogs are really spooky. (Apparently, one bit Leslie Banks.) And the rich madman has fun, gruesome carnage paintings on the walls. The sort of thing that Nandor enjoys when he misses the old days of Pllaging.
I think one of the reasons so many effects film are a zillion hours long today is to try and justify the increased ticket prices. If you’re going to spent $15 on a ticket, it’s assumed, you want more SPECTACLE! And vibrating chairs, and what-have-you. Boooooring…
I vaguely remember Gunga Din from seeing it as a teenager. I saw it after watching the first two Indiana Jones movies, and there were shots Spielberg clearly lifted from that movie as a kind of homage.
I just watched it. It is excellent! I love these short two-act films. Don't drag it out! You are at least partly right about the lengths of these new films. But I would almost always rather watch 2 60-minute films than 1 120-minute film. I wrote a capsule review of it but didn't have much to say:
I also watched The Naked Prey again today. It is listed as one version of this story but it really isn't. It's the story of rich a-holes who piss off the wrong people and get what they deserve. Just saying...
Great! I'm now at least 2-for-50 on the recs here. I really enjoyed Banks hamming it up bigtime, and I'll bet he enjoyed it, too (except when the dog bit him). Wray was a probably a funny person to know. And McRae would become a Stoic Cowboy actor, but he's best when he's a little befuddled, like in this and Palm Beach Story.

McCrea is a non-entity. Preston Sturges made great use of him in PBS and Sullivan's Travels!
He's kind of the Kevin Costner of his era...
