I remember seeing this movie in the theater when it was released in 1987. I enjoyed it, might have been a bit too young to really grasp the full experience. I remember seeing it again in the 1990s and connecting better with the more mature themes. I'd like to watch it a third time now, 30 years after the second viewing, to see what my perspective might be.

I'm guessing many of the news industry themes are amusingly outdated and might bring me a refreshing wave of nostalgia.

You are right about broadcast news always sucking. But it is also true that the opinions of Hunter were incredibly common. I like in her speech that she mentions the importance of 60 Minutes. That's because it was the first news program to make money and it changed the industry as you discussed. But I'm sure there are a ton of modern Hunters who pine for good ol' days of George W Bush when the news was good!

These are smart and well-educated people. But they aren't serious thinkers. And that's a major problem!

I would defend Lou Grant. I've gone back and watched it recently. It is surprisingly good -- way better than shows like MASH. And overall, I'd say the show is better than All the President's Men, which is so full of itself it's hard to watch today.

I like James L Brooks a lot. And I think, as a director, he's a genius because he manages to take scripts with major structural problems and make them work as films. But I don't want to revisit any of them.

Fun fact: I used to own a signed copy of this script. I have no idea what happened to it.
